Context
CIDECO was selected as a winner of the French government’s “Connected Bridges” innovation program.
The solution developed by CIDECO involves deploying a network of accelerometers to measure vibrations induced by traffic, and performing regular modal analyses on the recorded data.
Changes in a bridge’s natural frequency modes are indicative of early structural deterioration. By analyzing the spatial distribution of modal variations, the system can even localize the area where the anomaly is developing.
Opérations
The system was tested on five bridges made available by the Department of Puy-de-Dôme:
- Parentignat suspension bridge (built in 1830, listed as a historic monument) – risk of brittle failure
- Dallet metal truss bridge – corrosion issues
- Cournon bridge – reinforced concrete beams with hollow-core slabs
- Longues bridge – prestressed box girders
- Rochefort-Montagne viaduct
